Last year, Jackass star Bam Margera went through a very public struggle with alcohol on VH1’s Family Therapy With Dr. Jenn, but now the reality TV star is sober and rekindling his true passion: skateboarding.

In a new interview with Jenkem Mag, the 37-year-old opened up about his battle with alcoholism and how moving to Spain and surrounding himself with good people has kept him away from the bottle.

The Viva La Bam star told the skate magazine that he decided to do Family Therapy for the money, though he didn’t think his drinking issues were that substantial. “Once I went in, I realized musicians can party like rock stars because playing a guitar and being drunk go hand and hand, but if you want to skate and be drunk it doesn’t work. You’re gonna rack your nuts and slam your face, so once I realized that I haven’t skated because I’ve been sippin’ on too much alcohol, that’s when I got it.”

Margera admitted that his drinking got out of control after the death of his best friend and fellow Jackass co-star Ryan Dunn in 2011. Dunn lost his life after his car reportedly veered off a road and crashed into a tree. Toxicology reports later revealed that Dunn’s BAC was double the legal limit.

On an episode of Family Therapy, Margera addressed the emotional toll that Dunn’s death had on him. “I never had anybody that I care about die, and all of a sudden my best friend dies? What do you do now?” Margera asked. “I went on a drinking bender … my mom probably worried about me 98% of the day because she never knows what kind of call she’s going to get.”

In October 2015, Margera opened up about his newfound sobriety on a WMMR broadcast where he gave credit to his friends and the role they played in his sober journey.

Since that interview, Margera reveals that he had a brief relapse. “I was sober for a while, then once I picked up a drink again, I was like, ‘Wow this is a real problem.’ I would be a dick and give [his best friend, Brandon Novak] shit for not being able to stop using heroin, but I couldn’t put this fucking bottle down,” he told Jenkem.

He continued, “I never had any pill problems and I’ve never tried heroin in my life, but it’s been a real struggle for me to stay off the alcohol. But just as long you’re surrounded by good people and you have something to do, you’ll be good. Like in Barcelona I wake up and my mission is to skate all day. I know being in Spain is the best place for me right now to not drink.”
